If you plan on attending this year's parade, grab your warm accessories, hot drink, and freshen up on Glenwood's tips to help prepare for the festivities!

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is back! It is an event watched by millions of households across the country every Thanksgiving morning. Lucky for you New Yorkers, especially residents of Glenwood buildings in Manhattan, have the option to watch the parade live is at your fingertips!

While it’s free and open to the public, there are a few tips we’d recommend for anyone planning to go. Following the below suggestions will ensure your parade experience is pleasant and one to be talked about for years to come!

1. What to Know Before You Go

Before heading out to the parade, there are some basics you should be well informed of. The 94th Annual parade officially starts at 9am on Thursday, November 24th, 2022. The parade route goes like so: it starts at 77th Street and travels down Central Park West to Columbus Circle, where it then takes a left and heads east down Central Park South to 6th Avenue, where it continues going south until reaching 34th Street.

The long route gives ample space to view the parade from, but even with that, spectators typically start filling in by 6am to secure good views along the route. Which leads us to our next very important tip…

2. Have A Spot Picked Out Ahead Of Time

Whether you’re a tourist or local, you should have a game plan before you head out to the parade. This way you can either take the closest subway to your destination or have an Uber drop you off as close as possible to where you’re hoping to stand.

For instance, if you choose to be at the start of the parade on the Upper West Side, you’ll be able to see the entire parade go by in about an hour and a half, and be done by 10:30 am. This is a good point for Glenwood residents of nearby buildings Grand Tier and The Regent!

If you’re on the southern end of the route along 6th Avenue, expect the entire parade to last more like three hours. However, it might be easier to find a spot to stand along 6th Avenue than it is Uptown, so these are all things to take into consideration ahead of time.

The only spot that is repeatedly marked as “not to go” by folks who have done this several times is right near Macy’s, on 6th Avenue between 34th and 38th Streets, as there will be very limited viewing due to the national television broadcast and all the cameras and trucks that go along with it.

3. Bundle Up Appropriately

New York City is downright cold during this time of year, especially if you leave early in the morning. We suggest putting on lots of layers, this way, if things warm up once the sun peeks out later in the day, you can always take something off and still be comfortable.

One thing that has been a lifesaver for any sports fans attending outdoor games in the winter months are reusable hand/pocket warmers. You simply carry a few of these in your jacket pocket, and when you need an extra boost of heat, crack it open to release the warmth. An idea to keep in mind when planning what to bring!

4. If You’re Bringing Kids, Bring Entertainment!

While seeing the parade live is a dream come true for most kids, the potential five hour wait before any action starts most certainly is not! If you’re planning to bring kids, make sure you bring things for them to keep busy during the down time:

  • Reusable sticker books
  • Coloring pads
  • Holiday themed books
  • Word puzzles
  • iPods or smart phones loaded with kid-friendly podcasts and music they enjoy
  • Polaroid or other instant cameras for snapping images (or use your smart phone/digital camera and print them later)
  • Plenty of snacks and water

Just remember, you don’t want to be lugging too much on the parade route, so carrying your goodies in a backpack is an easy way to transport them, yourself, and your kids from point A to point B.

5. Know Where the Nearest Restroom Is

Having snacks and water has its pluses…and minuses. Chances are you (or one of your children) will need to use the facilities during the hours leading up to and during the parade. Make sure you note where the nearest open Starbucks, hotel, or other public restroom is.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it is time to start planning your meal! Since this year many will likely be celebrating with a smaller number of friends and family, you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed if in years passed you have only been in charge of bringing the dessert or a small side dish! Don’t fret, we have rounded up great suggestions on where to order Thanksgiving ready meals from or where to order the perfect ingredients for your home cooked meal! Keep reading to find out more.

Where To Shop For Food

Whether you’re making the entire dinner from scratch or relying completely on a “pick up the entire pre-cooked meal and re-heat right before serving” approach, you’re in luck because NYC truly has it all. From chain stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods to more NYC specific shops such as Fairway and the Amish Market, there’s plenty of grocery markets to pick up your ingredients. And if you really find yourself in a pinch, don’t discount placing an order via FreshDirect, which will deliver everything straight to your door on a date and time of your choosing (hence you skip all the madness of shopping in store, and do it all via your computer instead!) FreshDirect even has their own wine shop, allowing you to place a large delivery order for all your beverages, as well, but be sure to place your FreshDirect order a few days in advance so they don’t sell out of all your key Thanksgiving ingredients!

Here’s a few tips to remember before going out shopping for your ingredients:

  • Make a giant list ahead of time, including all the dishes you plan to make and every ingredient called for in each dish. This way you won’t be scrambling at the last minute for things!
  • Don’t forget to stop by the herb aisle to stock up on a few different kinds of fresh herbs and spices. Even if you don’t use them all in your dishes for flavoring, they can really spruce up your table setting, like cinnamon sticks!
  • Make sure to load up on a few easy snacks that don’t require any prep on your end and can be sitting out in bowls around your Glenwood apartment for your family to snack. A variety of nuts, crackers, cheeses, and dried fruits are good options to have on hand.

Decor and Table Settings

Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to pull out all the stops. Do you have china dishes and crystal glasses that have been sitting in your cabinets since your wedding? Rinse them off and set them up! And even if you’re using your everyday dishes, there’s some super simple ways to elevate them for the holiday. Even if you are only celebrating this Thanksgiving with your immediate family, setting a beautiful table is a great way to lift spirits!  Here’s a few of our tried-and-true tips:

  • Forage autumn materials in Central Park to use as table settings (such an easy activity for most Glenwood residents, particularly those living on the Upper East Side at The Marlowe!) From beautiful red, yellow, orange, and brown leaves that can be marked on with a gold Sharpie with guests’s names and used as nameplates, to acorns and pinecones and sticks that can be set in clear bowls and vases around the room, there’ss no shortage of ways to bring in the outside season into your home. Plus, this is a free and wonderful activity to have your children help you with!
  • And while it’s not necessary to go out shopping for entire new table settings, picking up a few special items from homegoods stores can make the occasion feel quite memorable. Perhaps a new pair of candlesticks from Pottery Barn, some updated autumn colored throw pillow covers from West Elm on the Westside, or a beautiful serving bowl from the Bloomingdale’s home department in Midtown East.

They're festive, family friendly, and delicious

It's that time of year again, when you have to make a decision. Do you want to host a Thanksgiving feast, with friends, family, loved ones, or some combination therein? Sounds nice, right? But also lots of work. Or maybe you and a significant other have been invited somewhere that, frankly, you'd really rather not go? Not for five hours or however long the chit chat and drinking and eating and football will last. Ah, but remember, there's always that third option, getting served Thanksgiving dinner in any number of NYC's great restaurants. Here's a quick look at few that sound most appealing…

Bubby's in Tribeca and the High Line

The hugely popular Americana-centric Bubby's is once again throwing an all-day Thanksgiving party at both their locations and if you're interested, get your reservations now. We haven't seen the menu yet but they're only doing family-style this year (no buffet), and you will likely be eating all of the classics, from turkey, stuffing, and sweet potatoes to pumpkin and pecan pies. (Top photo by Yumi Kimura.) The meal is being served from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m.; to reserve a table you must email thanksgiving@tribeca.bubbys.com OR thanksgiving@highline.bubbys.com

North End Grill in Battery Park City

For a more refined (but still fun!) downtown Thanksgiving dinner, it looks like Danny Meyer's great North End Grill will doing their thing again this year. The menu's not yet available, but expect Chef Eric Korsh to put his usual rustic-French spin on what has in the past been a four-course prix-fixe feast.

best-thanksgiving-restaurants-nyc-north-end-grill

Red Rooster in Harlem

Chef Marcus Samuelsson's Harlem mega-hit is likely hosting several Thanksgiving Day options, from a prix-fixe at Red Rooster proper to a grand buffet in the clubbish space downstairs, Ginny's Supper Club. Last year access to the buffet table cost $55 per person ($27 for kids 12 and under), and it groaned with three mains (turkey, pochetta, catfish) a half dozen sides (from Mac and Greens to Smoked Cheddar Potatoes), and an insane array of desserts like Pumpkin Bread Pudding and Chocolate Pretzel Sweet Potato Pie. Plan on doing a lot of not much after this one!

Dovetail on the Upper West Side

Chef John Fraser and his Michelin-starred Dovetail, handily located right across from the Museum of Natural History, is serving a three-course prix-fixe dinner this year (for $125), and man does it look good. If you're treating, I'll take the Truffled Pappardelle to start, the Pork Chop with hen-of-the-woods mushrooms as my main (with plenty of sides for the table), and the Impossible Cake–chocolate, flan, red currants–for dessert.

Felidia on the Upper East Side

Lidia Bastianich has been operating her beloved Felidia since 1981, and this Thanksgiving Chef Fortunato Nicotra has an outstanding-looking menu ready to serve you and yours. All dishes are served family style, it'll set up back $105 per person, and highlights will likely include Pumpkin Ravioli with butter and sage, Strip Loin "Roast Beef" with black truffle, and Pecan Crostata.

Hill Country Barbecue in Downtown Brooklyn

Finally, if you have a big crew or are looking for something super-casual (and likely pretty rowdy), the excellent Hill Country is putting out a major spread of all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving treats at their Brooklyn location. For $45 for adults, $20 for kids 10 and under, you can feast on Pit-Smoked Turkey, Pork Spare Ribs, Smoked Sausage, Corn Pudding, Cheddar Mac and Cheese, Texas Toast Stuffing, Bourbon Pecan Pie, PB&J Cupcake, on and on and on.

As previously determined (by me), Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year: the food, the family, the food, the gratitude and giving back, the food, the friends, the food… you get the idea. But even if you and yours partake in the longest, most relaxing Thanksgiving meal in history, that still leaves plenty of time that day–and even more plenty of time all of the glorious four-day weekend–to get out and about and enjoy the start of the city's most festive season. Plus: kids and grownups alike might need to blow off some steam after (or before) a day indoors eating stuffing and pie. Here, then, are a few of the many holiday-kick-off activities going on around town.

nyc-thanksgiving-2014-grand-central-holiday-train

Holiday Train Show at Grand Central

If you can't make it up to the Bronx over the weekend for the big Botanical Garden Train Show (and, note, the Garden is closed on Thanksgiving day itself), the next best thing is to hit up the smaller but still delightful Grand Central Terminal version. Now in its thirteenth year and set up in the NY Transit Museum Gallery near the entrance to the Times Square Shuttle, the 2014 Grand Central Holiday Train Show features two levels of tracks, vintage Lionel trains from the museum's collection (including rare New York Central models), a 34-foot-long miniature NYC with landmarks galore, and, of course, the train's "destination", the North Pole. One word of caution: Grand Central on Thanksgiving Day, especially in the early afternoon, is as crowded as you will ever see it. Photo by Becca.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular

If you want to go full tourist (or if you are hosting out-of-town guests who insist on doing the same), it doesn't get more NOT-locals-only than the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Although, as the New York Times points out in its semi-rave (really!) of the 2014 edition of the holiday classic, these days the Christmas Spectacular is "almost as much a celebration of New York as it is of the holidays. The message: You are so lucky to be here at this time of year." Truth. And although there are some hoary numbers–the show's been going on since 1933, after all–they apparently do their best to update things, with "giant GPS-guided snowflake bubbles" and 3-D sleigh rides. The highlight, however, remains the Rockettes, and their iconic March of Wooden Soldiers number, which I can tell you from personal experience is far more impressive (and fun) live than on TV. There are three performances of The Christmas Spectacular on Thanksgiving, at 2:00, 4:30, and 8:30, and then pretty much non-stop through the New Year.

South Street Seaport Tree Lighting

In what seems to be the first of the city's many (many) tree lighting ceremonies–the granddaddy of them all, the Rockefeller Center tree, gets the live-TV star-studded treatment on Wednesday evening, December 3–the South Street Seaport will illuminate its fairly modest but appropriately festive tree on Tuesday, December 2nd, at 6:00. There will be live bands, food trucks, a light show, hot chocolate, and, if you live down here, all of your friends and neighbors. But BEFORE then, starting now and all through Thanksgiving weekend and beyond, the tiny but fun Seaport ice skating rink is an easy family adventure, not nearly as jammed as Rock Center (or Bryant Park, see below), and a good excuse to get the troops out of the house for a while. Photo by Michael Dunne.

nyc-thanksgiving-2014-big-apple-circus-collage

The Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center

Although not Thanksgiving- (or "holiday"-) themed per se, the annual Big Apple Circus has set up its tent in Damrosch Park at the back of Lincoln Center, and will be wowing folks with their intimate staging ("no one seats more than 50 feet from ringside!"), aerial wizardry, and signature silliness through the New Year. The show this year–their 37th!–is called Metamorphosis and features the world-class contortionists Odbayasakh Dorjoo and Tatevik Seyranyan, the insane juggling and balancing skills of Rolla Bolla, Nadine and her Bubbles, and the Quick Change hijinks of the Smirnov Duo. There are still tickets available for the 1:00 p.m. Thanksgiving Day show, but if that's right in the middle of your turkey-basting duties, you should definitely try to make room at some point this season for these guys. From what I hear, the Big Apple Circus is a guaranteed winner for the whole crew.    .

New York City's Bryant Park skating rink is open on Thanksgiving

The Winter Village at Bryant Park

Speaking of ice skating, the spacious and rightly-popular rink at Bryant Park Rink is now open for the season, as is all of the surrounding pop-up shops and food booths (more on NYC's booming holiday market business next week…). As always, the trick to enjoying the Bryant Park rink is NOT coming here at prime time, which means nights and weekends (Thanksgiving Day, when it's open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., could go either way, crowd-wise). And make sure you bring your own lock and no bags that you'll be forced to expensively check, otherwise the cost of your fun will quickly escalate. But if you time it correctly, there is no prettier spot to skate in the city. Plus, the area now has that new Blue Bottle Coffee and, if you're playing hooky and are there on a weekday afternoon, the peerless Alidoro sandwich shop.

Penguins at the Central Park Zoo

Hang out with animals you are NOT eating, at NYC Zoos

Somewhat surprisingly, all of NYC's zoos are open on Thanksgiving, including the most conveniently located for Glenwood residents, the Central Park Zoo. Admittedly, I haven't been here since my kids were little (and when I was a kid I might have set the record for "Most Times In a Row Down the Peter Rabbit Log Slide", much to the I'm sure severe boredom of my grandmother), but all signs indicate that it's in good shape, and an easy way to entertain the kids for a couple of hours. The Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, the Bronx Zoo in the Bronx, the Queens Zoo in, uh, Queens, all also open. But if you're feeling especially ambitious, the smart move might be to check out the NY Aquarium, located right on the boardwalk in Coney Island, which has to be far less crowded now that it is during the summer.

Volunteers celebrating at a Thanksgiving food drive on Thanksgiving

It's almost Thanksgiving! Yesssssssssssss. This is my personal favorite holiday of the year, by the way, because its entirely about food, friends and family, with almost zero shopping. Except to buy the food. And I love food shopping. And food eating. Anyway… because the Thanksgiving holiday is really only a single (albeit usually long) meal, the day, and the long weekend that follows, also offers you and your family ample opportunity to show your gratitude for your plenitude by giving back to the community. Here, then, are just a few local ideas for volunteering on the actual day, as well other opportunities to do the right thing throughout the holiday season.

Volunteers from City harvest showing off their collection of canned goods for Thanskgiving

City Harvest

Each year the great City Harvest helps feed more than 1.4 million of your fellow New Yorkers facing hunger, passing along rescued food that would have otherwise been thrown away (over 136,000 pounds every day!) to community centers, shelters, church groups, senior homes and the like. There are lots of ways you can get involved with City Harvest, via financial donations (93 cents of every dollar goes directly to those in need), volunteering your time at various points in the "food chain", or by bringing as much non-persishable food as you carry to any number of City Harvest drop-off centers during their annual Food Drive, co-sponsored by The Daily News and running now through January 16. For a list of drop-off sites, information on how to organize a food drive at your school or workplace, and a look at how you can volunteer this Thanksgiving, please see here.

Two vans from God's Love We Deliver ready for Thanskgiving deliveries

God's Love We Deliver

Bringing good, nutritious meals and a whole lot of love to the homes of New Yorkers too ravaged by illness to fully support themselves… that is the mission of the wonderful God's Love We Deliver. Since its founding in 1985, during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic, God's Love We Deliver has cooked and delivered more than 15 million meals in all, and this year will serve some 4,600 meals every day to those who can't prepare their own food, whether just for themselves or for their children, too. The number of active volunteers with this vital organization already tops 8,000 people annually, but there's always an extra need on Thanksgiving Day itself, both in their Brooklyn kitchen, the temporary home while they renovate their usual Soho location, and at distribution centers throughout Manhattan. To learn how you and your family can get involved with God's Love We Deliver volunteering see here.

Logo for the New York Cares Coat Drive beginning November 17th

New York Cares Coat Drive

One of the easiest, most immediately impactful ways to give this and every year is by going through your closet and donating your gently-used winter coats to the annual New York Cares Coat Drive. Last year New York Cares collected some 78,000 coats that would have otherwise gone un- (or under-) used by the likes of you, and distributed them to your fellow citizens who needed something warm to get through the winter. This year the Coat Drive begins on November 17, and as usual there will be some 300 drop-off sites in handy locations around the city (check back in a few days to their website, here, for the complete list). Of course, in addition to the Coat Drive, New York Cares does a lot more this holiday season and all year long, and you can find plenty of other volunteer opportunities here as well.

FeedingNYC hand delivers over 3,000 Thanksgiving meals each year

FeedingNYC

On a slightly smaller scale (except to those who receive the food; then there's nothing small about it), the folks at FeedingNYC have been hand-delivering some 3,000 Thanksgiving dinners every year these past few years to people in need throughout the city. This year, working with the Dream Big Foundation, FeedingNYC is jumping the gun a bit by bringing together nearly 400 volunteers on Tuesday, November 25, to Chelsea Piers, where they'll (you'll?) help pack up and deliver full Thanksgiving meals to thousands of local families and shelters. And because FeedingNYC is organizing the whole thing two days prior to Thanksgiving, that means you can help out here, and then chip in later in the week somewhere else as well! You'll find more information about FeedingNYC and the FeedingNYC Thanksgiving dinner program here.

Food Bank NYC is preparing for a virtual Food drive for Thanksgiving 2014

Food Bank For NYC

Food Bank For NYC has been one of the city's major hunger-relief organizations since its founding in 1983, and it provides all sorts of goods and services to New Yorkers in need throughout the year. But it's during the holiday season, starting now and running through the New Year, that the Food Bank's ingenious Virtual Food Drive tends to be the most fruitful. Here's how it works: individuals or organizations set up an account on the Food Bank For NYC's website, and solicit funds (or, "virtual canned goods") from friends, relatives, co-workers, whomever. The Food Bank then uses the money you've raised to feed local families, parlaying their economies of scale to get far more food-bang for each buck. In fact, Food Bank For NYC estimates that each dollar donated to a Virtual Food Drive can provide a healthy, fulfilling meal to as many as five people. For more information on Food Bank For NYC, and to set up your own Virtual Food Drive.

Finally, if you're thinking about committing your time, energy, skills, and brainpower on a long-term basis toward helping the more 2 million New Yorkers living in poverty, living daily without enough food (a terrible problem that seems unlikely to go away on its own), maybe you want to explore what the NYC Coalition Against Hunger is all about. What the NYCCAH does is help connect talented, willing individuals with food pantries and kitchens, not as prep cooks or box packers (as valuable as those services may be), but rather as, for example, web designers, grant writers, and accountants. The NYCCAH is also always on the lookout for activist-minded individuals who can volunteer in advocacy and outreach efforts, to ensure that those who are eligible for and deserve assistance are getting it. Letter-writing campaigns, petitions, lobbying efforts: the city needs sharp minds and passionate people to join in the fight. Learn more about NYC Coalition Against Hunger volunteer opportuntinies here

A view of cranberries to be prepared into cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving

It's that time of year again when the Thanksgiving dinner plans are slowly coming into focus. Do you have a certain family member or friend who every year makes a fantastic meal and invites you to come? Congratulations! You are totally set. But for those of us whose annual feast varies from year to year, and you're thinking of maybe going the restaurant route–which, by the way, can be a welcome reprieve from the usual home gathering, not to mention a delicious one–now is definitely the time to grab a reservation. Just like we did for Thanksgiving 2013, here are just a few of the many, many restaurants in town who are serving special Thanksgiving menus.

The interior view of the restaurant wd-50 prepping for Thanksgiving 2014

wd-50

The hottest ticket in town on the 27th will be at Chef Wylie Dufresne's "house" on Clinton Street, wd-50, which is not only one of New York City's best restaurants (a fact to which I can personally attest), but is also an landmark of modernist cooking technique. Which makes it sound a lot less fun than it actually is. As you've probably heard, after a glorious 11-year run, Dufresne is shutting down wd-50 at the end of the month, but not before serving two-weeks-worth of special, ticketed dinners, one of which, of course, falls on Thanksgiving. For $85, Dufresne and crew will cook you and yours wd-50's traditional Thanksgiving "family (aka staff) meal", three courses and all the fixin's, and they're sending everyone home with a "leftover" turkey sandwich.

Rosemary's restaurant one of NYC's premier Thanksgiving menus

Rosemary's

Rosemary's is one of the prettiest restaurants in the West Village–which, considering this neighborhood is the world capital of pretty places, is saying a lot–and so seems like a sure bet to serve up a Thanksgiving feast in cozy, holiday-satisfying style. More important, based on a recent visit during which I gorged on the "seasonal Italian" creations of Chef Wade Moises, the food at Rosemary's remains first-rate, even after some two and a half years of dealing with packed houses nearly every night. Still plenty of love back there in the kitchen. Anyway, Thanksgiving at Rosemary's will set you back $70 per person (half that for kids), and the menu includes Cavatelli with Butternut Squash; Turkey "alla pugliese" with Maple Gravy; Kale and Pomegranate Slaw; Chestnut "in Crosta"; and Pumpkin Tiramisu.

Boulud Sud, one of two Boulud restaurants preparing meals for Thaksgiving 2014.

Have a Daniel Boulud Thanksgiving!

Chef and restaurateur extraordinaire Daniel Boulud is transforming almost his entire NYC empire into a kind of Thanksgiving party central, with special prix-fixe menus taking over several of his most beloved spots. On the Upper West Side, you'll find seasonal delights like Squash Gnocchi and Pumpkin Custard at the meat-centric Bar Boulud (three courses, plus a side, for $70), and the Mediterranean-inspired Boulud Sud (three for $85). Across the Park, Upper East Siders can get in on the action at the classically elegant Cafe Boulud, where three course will set you back $125 and you can dine on the likes of Striped Bass "en Paupiette" and Wild Mushroom Risotto if you don't feel like turkey (which, by the way, sounds great here, served with chestnut-ciabatta stuffing). And for those of you who'd rather celebrate in a more raucous, downtown fashion, Boulud's DBGB will stuff you silly for $60 with more casual (but no less skillfully prepared) fare like Butternut Squash Soup, Alsatian Apple Tart, and The Gobbler Burger, which is topped with, among other things, toasted pumpkin seeds and cranberry ketchup.

Jean-Georges The Mark restaurant will be open for Thanksgiving 2014.

Or have a Jean-Georges Thanksgiving instead!

The Jean-Georges family of acclaimed restaurants also have several special prix-fixe menus in the offing come Thanksgiving. The Mark, Jean-George's ultra-classy spot on the Upper East Side, will be serving a three-course feast for $128 (children can get two courses for $75), featuring traditional dishes like Roasted Turkey with Foie Gras and Chestnut Stuffing as well as traditional-ish ones such as Fresh Angel Hair Pasta with Caramelized Brussels Sprouts. Meanwhile, at Jean-Georges's brilliant Perry Street in the West Village, there will be a four-course Thanksgiving meal on offer beginning at 11:30 in the morning. No choices here, but your $98 will get you Scallop Tartare with Black Truffle, Seared Sea Bass, Roasted Turkey with Crispy Stuffing, and an as-yet-undisclosed dessert. And in Soho, at Mercer Kitchen, the same price will get a different four-course fixed meal, featuring Tuna Tartare, Skuna Salmon, Roaste Turkey, and a similarly mysterious dessert. Maybe do lunch at one, dinner at the other, and compare??

The menu at Freeman's will be prepped for Thanksgiving 2014

Freemans

Remember when Freemans opened ten (!) years ago, and it was this really cool secret spot at the end of sketchy-seeming alley off Bowery? Yeah, that was fun. But even though Taavo Somer and William Tigertt's "Colonial American Tavern" has been full mainstream for some time now, the place is still interesting and sceney and the food's still really good, so it's likely that Thanksgiving at Freemans is a solid bet. Menu details are a little scant right now, but we do know that they'll be serving four courses of traditional Thanksgiving dishes (turkey, stuffing, veggies, pies) for $80. And, of course, there will be ample opportunity to sample one (or three) of Freemans' signature cocktails, like the Rose Tattoo, with rye, cognac, Bénédictine, Carpano Antica, and bitters.

A festive holiday menu awaits you at Ai Fiore for Thanksgiving 2014

Ai Fiori

Finally, Michael White's Ai Fiori, one of NYC's best Italian restaurants (one star from Michelin; three from the Times) pulls out all the stops every Thanksgiving, and this year appears to be no exception. The four course dinner at White's elegant-but-lively Midtown place will set you back $110, but you can choose from the likes of Agnolotti stuffed with braised veal, butternut squash purée, brown butter, sage, and black truffle sugo; Capesante, or pan seared sea scallops, served with beluga lentils, baby carrots, and pancetta; and a Caramel Apple Confit with brown butter, cider, and vanilla gelato. Buon Giorno del Ringraziamento!
